Tablets have been on the rise for the past few months. They are expected to become even more popular in the next few years. In the meantime, netbooks have been losing steam. It is no wonder some netbook makers are planning to get out of the market altogether. For ASUS, things are a bit different. While the company is working on killer Android tablets, it can’t afford to get out of the netbook business overnight. The company is expected to ship 4.8 netbooks by the end of 2011. Netbooks have been taking a lot of hits from tablets in the past few months. Tablets are not only affordable but more portable. The rise of apps have helped tablets such as iPad leave its competing devices further behind. ASUS is not going to give up the netbook market without a fight though. It is planning to launch super cheap netbooks to re-ignite interest in this market. Asustek has not had great results in the past couple of quarters as far as netbooks are concerned. No wonder the company is planning under $200 netbooks to salvage its netbook division:

Sources from notebook component players pointed out that Asustek only shipped about 350,000 Eee PCs in April as the tablet PCs had significantly impacted the demand for the devices. To counter the assault, in addition to push its own tablet PCs, the company is also set to launch a new killer Eee PC model in June as well as Eee PC model with price less than US$199, (more…)

iPad Already Putting Pressure on ASUS?

ASUSTek is the company behind some of the best netbooks we have seen. The company has a variety of netbook models available for sale and keeps pumping out new ones. Unfortunately, ASUS netbooks have not fared too well when competing with iPad for consumers’ bucks. How else can you explain the company have to drop its shipment estimates for the rest of 2010. Apple iPad has been priced very aggressively (something Apple has not done in the past). Netbook prices have not dropped enough to make “price” a decisive factor one way or another. (more…)
