Apple has had a lot of success with iTunes app store for iPhone and iPad. There are thousands of apps available in that store (many of which are free or cost less than a couple of dollars). These apps have not only made iPhone/iPad owners’ experience with their devices richer, they have made it hard for Apple competitors to compete. Apparently, Intel has learned its lesson and is planning a similar strategy for netbooks. AppUp Center has been in the works for quite some time and will be coming out of beta in September.

Traditional software solutions do not perform too well on most netbooks. Having light-weight apps that work without a hitch on netbooks can be very useful for netbook owners. That’s what AppUp center promises. This store is expected to work in a similar way to those of Apple’s and Google’s. Developers submit their apps, users download/purchase apps, and rate them (among other things). (more…)

ASUSTek is the company behind some of the best netbooks we have seen. The company has a variety of netbook models available for sale and keeps pumping out new ones. Unfortunately, ASUS netbooks have not fared too well when competing with iPad for consumers’ bucks. How else can you explain the company have to drop its shipment estimates for the rest of 2010. Apple iPad has been priced very aggressively (something Apple has not done in the past). Netbook prices have not dropped enough to make “price” a decisive factor one way or another. (more…)
So you want to use your netbook as you would your computer, without hurting your back and body in the process. That’s why vertical notebook stands are very handy. They help you lift your netbook and use it more conveniently, whether you are at home on the road. Some of these stands have a cooling fan, which is even better.
If you are looking for a notebook stand to use your gadget more conveniently (and ease the pressure on your body), these 6 netbook stands are worth a look:

Bracketron LTM-204-BX Netbook Cooling Stand: a pretty handy netbook stand that supports multiple viewing angles and has a USB powered cooling fan.

Adjustable Laptop Stand with USB Hub: provides better air flow for your laptop. Very light-weight and solid. Sports a 4-port USB hub too.

Bracketron LTM-205-BX Netbook X-type Stand: a foldable stand that is quite portable and easy to put together. Supports multiple angles from 0 to 45 degrees. (more…)

Tablets and smart-books are all decent challengers to netbooks. But it’s those hybrid devices (such as iPad) that netbook makers need to worry about the most. Toshiba Libretto W100 is one of those devices. Toshiba may have some of the best laptops and netbooks on the market. But that hasn’t stopped the company from coming up with a hybrid device to challenge devices such as iPad head on. Libretto W100 has dual 7 inch screens and features a 1.2 GHz processor, 2 GB of RAM, a 62 GB SSD hard drive. It is very portable and runs Windows 7.

Have had enough of ASUS netbooks already? ASUStek does have the tendency to release a ton of netbook models each year. This year is no different. ASUS Eee PC 1015PED is yet another decent netbook that has just been released to the market. It does take advantage of ATOM N475 (1.83 Ghz) and 1 GB DDR3 RAM to offer you more speed with your daily tasks. Just like most ASUS netbooks, this unit does come with a 500 GB online storage too (for 1 year).

ASUS Eee PC 1015PED does have a faster CPU, but it also is pretty energy efficient. According to ASUStek, users should be able to get 13 hours of battery life out of their netbook. (more…)

In case you have been waiting for the latest and greatest ASUS netbook, the wait is finally over. ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1016P, which just went on sale on Amazon, may not have the fastest processors around, but it does have many advantages over regular netbooks. For starters, it does have ATOM N455 processor, which means you can use your DDR3 RAMs in this machine. It already comes with 2 GB RAM on board. The inclusion of Windows 7 professional is a nice touch too.
ASUS Eee PC 1016P also have 320 GB of hard drive storage and Gigabit Ethernet. Add Bluetooth 3.0 to the mix, and you have got one powerful machine (specs after the break):

Netbooks and other handheld devices have been pushed back hard by Apple iPad. It seems Apple iPad won’t be the only device these other device makers need to worry about. Dell Streak is another exciting tablet that is more than capable of handling everyday tasks. It runs Android, which makes it even more formidable. Dell Streak is more than just a tablet. It’s a 5 inch handheld device that can be used for social networking, navigation, and entertainment on the go.
Here are Dell Streak’s specifications (according to Dell.com):
- Android platform complete with Android Market and Dell user interface enhancements
- Powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon solution with integrated 1GHz processor
- 3G + Wi-Fi + Bluetooth
- UMTS / GPRS / EDGE class 12 GSM radio with link speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps* (more…)

We have been hearing about these upcoming AMD netbooks for quite some time. Unfortunately, not too many of them are around in the U.S. Gateway LT22 is one of those AMD-based netbooks. It has just become available in Canada and does pack a punch. It has an Athlon K125 processor and a decent graphics card. Here is a run down of what’s included:

One does not have to be a genius to realize that netbook sales have been slowing down. These tiny devices had all the momentum early last year. There are just too many other alternative devices on the market, which means it is inevitable that netbook manufacturers will lose some of their customers to shiny device makers such as Apple. Netbooks have gotten a bad name for sluggish performance and slow processors in the past. The new netbook models are much more powerful and more capable of handling complex tasks (e.g. gaming). Intel intends to prove just that by asking developers to join in and develop their own games for a chance to win $5,000 (and some publicity too).

The games will be judged based on graphic and also all around features. Here are some of the prizes developers can win (in addition to the $5,000 up for grabs for best all around game): (more…)
Dell Inspiron M101z is one of those computers that sits between a netbook and a real laptop. There seems to be more of these types of devices around these days. It will take advantage of AMD Athlon II Neo Mobile and integrated graphics ATI to offer a better computing experience to its users. The battery life expected to be around 6 hours.
Here is how the specification sheet looks like:
