Netbooks vs. iPhone

iPhone 3GS

So what is it about these mini Internet devices that are coming out everyday that makes them so hot and a must have? I am not talking about netbooks but rather iPhone and all other mini devices that are coming around. Just recently, we heard Dell has plans to introduce a portable Internet gadget, to possibly compete with iPod Touch. Many other companies have already shown their interest in coming up with similar devices. While I don’t consider iPhone a true competitor to netbooks (they could co-exist), it’s still interesting to see how netbooks are becoming too large for some people.

iPhone is the cream of the crop. If there is one device that can take market-share away from netbooks, it’s iPhone. The device is not only powerful, but it is built upon a platform that gives consumers access to thousands of cool applications. But as much as I like my iPhone, I am not sure it can be used to get heavy duty business things done on the road. You can always write a e-mail, send pictures and documents, and watch video presentations on your phone. But if you want to be on Twitter and Facebook at the same time, type up your Word document, and watch a video at the same time. iPhone may be powerful and attractive, but it’s not a laptop.

A whole lot of people are getting better at using mobile devices to get more things done on the go, and I have no doubt we will see more powerful mobile gadgets in the future. But for now, iPhone and netbooks remain attractive for very different reasons. You can always make the comparison but it’s still apples and oranges at this point.

Your take: what would be your choice if you had to pick one? A netbook or an iPhone?
