Intel’s AppUp netbook store Coming In September

Apple has had a lot of success with iTunes app store for iPhone and iPad. There are thousands of apps available in that store (many of which are free or cost less than a couple of dollars). These apps have not only made iPhone/iPad owners’ experience with their devices richer, they have made it hard for Apple competitors to compete. Apparently, Intel has learned its lesson and is planning a similar strategy for netbooks. AppUp Center has been in the works for quite some time and will be coming out of beta in September.

Traditional software solutions do not perform too well on most netbooks. Having light-weight apps that work without a hitch on netbooks can be very useful for netbook owners. That’s what AppUp center promises. This store is expected to work in a similar way to those of Apple’s and Google’s. Developers submit their apps, users download/purchase apps, and rate them (among other things).

AppUp Center has gotten a lot of praise from those who have tested it. But it’s not clear whether it can be the savior of netbooks. There is no reason netbooks can’t run Apple iPhone type applications. The processors used in these tiny laptops are powerful enough to do the job. Will a lot of developers jump at this chance? That remains to be seen.
