Recently, we have been hearing more about the rise of Ultrabooks. These ultra thin tablets offer more power than netbooks and are very thin. 178m Ultrabook shipments by 2016

While netbooks are falling, ultrabooks are rising. They are expected to be the future of laptops in the next few years. How big this market is going to get? According to Juniper Research’s forecasts, 178m ultrabooks could be sold per year by 2016. That would still not top tablet sales, which could reach 253m units. There is no question that ultrabook prices are a bit too much for consumers at this point.

While Intel’s control of the brand ensures that Ultrabooks stand out from traditional notebooks, vendors face a balancing act in terms of product strategy… Meeting Intel’s specification secures brand status and funding, but the step-change from notebooks means many of today’s Ultrabooks are too expensive for many consumers (more…)

It is no secret that netbooks have been declining with the rise of tablets. These were highly portable laptops at great prices that rose to amazing heights a couple of years ago. With the rise of affordable, premium tablets, netbooks have lost a lot of marketshare. Take Microsoft for instance. Netbooks were responsible for 8% of the company’s sales a year ago (now only 2%). As Patrick Moorhead, principal at Moor Insights, explains, netbooks just lost out to better alternatives: (more…)

Intel Q4 Revenue Beats Estimates, Netbooks Down

Even though the netbook market has been slowing down for a while now, companies involved in this business have been selling a significant number of these products recently. But the demand for netbooks is dwindling. Even though, Intel beat its revenue estimates in the last quarter of 2011, the company’s ATOM processors are not exactly posting promising results. In fact, revenues of these processes has dropped 38 percent from the last quarter and 57 percent from last year. With the demand for netbooks slowing down, these are not surprising results by any means.

Netbooks will continue to be around for the time being. But their glory days are behind them.

Acer: 35% of our Notebooks will be Ultrabooks

Ultrabooks are on the rise. Even though a couple of netbook makers are still going to continue bringing new models to the market, most will be focusing on ultra thin laptops. Acer is planning to be a big player in this market. The company expects about 35% of its notebooks to be ultrabooks. Acer has been losing marketshare thanks to the rise of tablets such as the iPad. Acer’s focus on Ultrabooks won’t turn the company’s fortunes around overnight. Apple is still going to be hard to beat in the ultrabook space.
