ASUS To Bring Back 8.9 Inch Netbooks?

In the early days of the netbook market, there were plenty of small screen netbooks available for consumers to choose from. It was not too difficult to find a decent 7″ or 8.9:” netbook back then. These days, you’d struggle to find a good one as most netbook makers have settled on 10.1″ displays with a few adding larger screen sizes (11.6″, 12″). While one should not expect those smaller netbooks to make a comeback anytime soon, it is still possible to get an entry-level 8.9″ netbook (with Windows XP) thanks to ASUSTeK. ASUS Eee PC 900AX, which was recently announced, is a compact, tiny netbook that targets the entry level netbook market and gives travelers a more compact option to go with.

This netbook has a 8.9″ LED Backlight WXGA screen (1024X600), which means you get the standard screen resolution as some of those larger netboks. The device is a bit more compact and portable. It weighs only 2.4 lbs and can fit in those small bags. The trouble is ASUSTeK seems to have used a time machine to bring this netbook to fruition. The device has the same features we used to see in netbooks a couple of years ago. It uses the old N270 ATOM processor and has a 4 cell battery. Simply put, don’t expect this device to impress you with its speed.

  • Operating System: Genuine Windows® XP Home
  • Display: 8.9″ LED Backlight WXGA Screen (1024X600)
  • CPU & Chipset: Intel® Atom™ N270
  • Memory: DDR2 SO-DIMM 1GB
  • Wireless Data Network: WLAN 802.11b/g
  • Battery: 4 cells Li-ion Battery Pack
  • Dimensions: 170mm(L)*225mm(W)*34mm(H)

ASUS Eee PC 900AX netbook is not something to write home about. It’s a decent entry-level netbook, and it will be affordable too. The question at this point is whether ASUSTeK is ready to make another run with more powerful 8.9″ screen netbooks. There is no reason for the company not to test out the idea.
